Communion Collapse Spirit Night
Definition
Dark night of the spirit — the deeper purification stage in classical Christian contemplative tradition. Distinct from Felt Absence (felt loss of transcendent relationship) by its developmental framing and tradition's positive valuation of the process; distinct from the dark night of the senses in the Inspiration Collapse cascade by its targeting the spirit-substrate rather than receptivity-of-senses. Anchored in classical Christian-mystical literature. Severity is rated high on the functional impairment of prolonged spiritual desolation (cf. the dark-night-vs-depression differential), not on the tradition's positive valuation of the process — clinical urgency, not theological depth, sets the band.
